New Zealand maintained the top importer's position, which imported 11,529 vehicles, down 1.4 percent on the year. Shortage of car carriers between Japan and New Zealand still discouraged the stable sevices of maritime transport of vehicles.
Exports to United Arab Emirates declined 9.0 percent from a year earlier. Used vehicles destined for Myanmar also declined 12.0 percent.
Exports to Sri Lanka climbed 179.1 percent due to the last-minute demand before introduction of the revised taxation system. The average FOB price stood at 1.19 million yen per vehicle. Newer hybrid cars and under 6611 rn "minivehicle" took the center of the Sri Lankan-bound vehicles.
Used vehicles destined for Bangladesh also increased 53.6 percent. Exporter eased their self-restriction on shipment as the government might not change the import rule.
In terms of the FOB price of exported vehicles, Malaysia and Singapore were prominent with high levels of 2.57 million yen and 2.36 million yen, respectively. Many newer cars, so-called "unused registered car" were included in vehicles destined for the two destinations.
Exports to Russia increased 3.6 percent. The pace of double-digit increase slowed in May.
On the other hand, exports to Pakistan and Jamaica dropped by 15.2 percent and 19.6 percent, respectively.
In January-May 2018, used vehicles exports totaled 548,355 units, up 5.5 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
