Used vehicle exports rise 17th straight month, Russia, Sri Lanka boost, NZ still slow
In March 2018, used vehicle exports from Japan totaled 122,281 units, up 4.3 percent from a year earlier. According to the Ministry of Finance's Trade statistics, the March 2018 figure marked year-on-year increase for seventeen consecutive months since November 2016.
Passenger car, truck and dump, bus, and electrified vehicles (electric vehicle, hybrid vehicle and plug-in hybrid vehicle) are included in the export statistics.
New Zealand came back to the largest importer's position, to which 11,985 used vehicles were exported. However, the figure was 15.4 percent behind the previous year's level. Due partly to confused shipment schedule caused by the NZ authority's notice regarding inspection of stink bugs, the importation of used vehicles is still stagnant in recent months.
Exports to United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) also declined 22.5 percent on the year.
In contrast, exports to Russia climbed 81.7 percent to 10,243 units. The average FOB price of the vehicles bound for that nation increased around 100,000 yen compared to the previous year.
Used vehicles bound for Sri Lanka jumped 157.9 percent on the year. Local dealers actively purchased vehicles to meet last-minute demand in high season in mid-April. Sharp year on year increases were also found in exports to South Africa, Tanzania, Singapore, Afghanistan, Mozambique, Surinam, Zambia, etc. On the other hand, exports to Pakistan and Bangladesh tumbled by 26.2 percent and 58.1 percent, respectively.
In January-March 2018, used vehicles exports totaled 303,050 units, up 3.2 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

Swaziland gets new name
Africa's last absolute monarch has marked his country's 50th birthday with a rather unconventional gift: a different name. During Golden Jubilee celebrations on April 19, King Mswati III announced that from this point henceforth, the land formerly known as Swaziland is now to be known as the Kingdom of eSwatini.
The king made his declaration to a crowded stadium in Manzini, noting the name change is intended to shed vestiges of the country's colonial past. For much of the 20th century, the nation was under British administration, only gaining its independence in 1968.
